Brendan is a Tangata Tiaki for Kāti Huirapa and Chair of the East Otago Taiāpure Committee. He leads research within the East Coast Otago Taiāpure as well as supporting the Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai research team in the field when working in other areas. Brendan recently led the He Pātaka Wai Ora Project, monitoring the health of the Waikouaiti River. The project and aims to support kaitiaki and the community in their decision making around river restoration efforts.
The He Pātaka Wai Ora project was developed to enable Kāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki to identify river health issues in the Waikouaiti River, and prioritise restoration efforts in the catchment. Brendan and his team hope that this project, although restricted to Waikouaiti Awa, may encourage other hapū, whānau, and communities to use similar methods in understanding how their waterways are being impacted by land-use. Brendan will share his experiences and insights to date on this 200-year project to restore the pātaka of the Waikouaiti River.
