John Jameson has spent a lifetime in the fishing industry having completed a degree in marine biology from Wellington. After a decade of working for the Australian Department of Primary Industry developing fisheries policy, he returned to New Zealand to develop mussel farms in the Coromandel. John bought an eel business in Whenuapai in 1989, and operated it until it was purchased by Moana NZ (formally known as Aotearoa Fisheries Limited) in 2004. Since that time, he has been assisting Moana NZ with their eel interests including exploratory work with Rangitaane on glass eel availability for farming.
John believes that forging a closer relationship between the commercial and customary sectors of the eel fishery will be the key to combating outside threats to freshwater habitat and developing a management regime which better delivers on the expectations of both sectors.
John and Mike will provide insight into the state of eel stocks and the eel fishery in the North island, and the issues that they believe are ahead for the fishery. They will also explore what we might collectively do to further protect and improve the fishery.
